Coders
In healthcare, the whole medical coding process starts with a patient visiting a medical practitioner or facility. These events are documented by the provider of care, with that documentation converted into “codes” that serve as the basis of payment for services.

It is a very intricate process to accurately identify dozens of codes for each patient encounter. The process is further complicated with each standardized set of codes being updated each year to reflect new medical technologies, diagnoses and procedures. The coding process is very complex and requires specialized training that very few people have but all coders need.

With costs expected to double over the next ten years, those financing the U.S. healthcare system will increasingly demand accuracy and increase auditing to ensure the billing is accurate. At the same time, as demand grows for medical services, so will the need for clinical and administrative personnel to make the whole system operate. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, employment is expected to increase by 18% through 2016 in the medical field.

Considering the current shortage of coding professionals, the expected increase in the demand for coders, and the increased scrutiny and corresponding requirement for accuracy and completeness, there has never been a better time to enter the medical coding profession.
