As one of the first employees at The Coding Source (TCS), Carol is responsible for overseeing TCS’ Medicare Risk Adjustment (MRA) Coding Audit and Education Department which includes oversight of 60+ FTE Medical Coders. Carol also assists medical groups and its physicians in the chart review process by conducting follow up provider education and training, by reviewing strengths and weaknesses of the physicians’ coding and documentation observed during the initial chart audit. During Carol’s time with TCS, she has developed and held various Risk Adjustment and coding trainings, including Coder MRA orientations and Physician education. She also developed and oversees an extensive QA program for Risk Adjustment at TCS and has taught the Professional Medical Coding Curriculum (PMCC) to hundreds of students over the years.

Carol’s in-depth knowledge comes from years of experience in both the private and public sectors of the healthcare industry. Before joining TCS, she handled extensive auditing and training for a large California County, providing diverse services in the behavioral and public health settings. She provided physician and staff training for the County in CPT including E/M, ICD-9, and HCPCS coding. In addition, she represented the QIPC Clinical Core Group regarding coding guidelines and compliance issues.

Prior to joining the County, Carol was a Coding Specialist for a highly successful, California-based IPA where she was responsible for multi-specialty CPT, ICD-9 and HCPCS coding for over 100,000 lives. This exposure provided a breadth of knowledge in case management, benefit administration, eligibility, referrals/authorizations, capitation, contracting, and billing. Her experience in lab, x-ray, physical therapy, and family practice coding comes from years of work in a large Family Practice/OB medical group.

Carol’s career began over thirty years ago as a Nurses Aide for various California hospitals on the Orthopedic and Medical-Surgical floors. She is a member of the AAPC, AHIMA, CHIA, ACMCS and ICE organizations. Carol is currently the Education Officer for the Orange County AAPC Chapter. She was awarded the 2002 County Auditor-Controller Outstanding Employee Shining Star award and also the Manager Award for the County. Additionally, Carol designed and conducted physician/provider-coding and compliance training to hundreds of County Public Health and Medical Billing Unit staff.
